Mel Gibson had first given me the strong impression from his famous and excellent performance in “Lethal Weapons” series. Then he started his new challenge to be a director of “Braveheart”. From “Braveheart” to “Apocalypto”, it is not difficult to recognize his specific style of directing in story structure, action, shots...
Although he does the finest work this time, the visuals are beautiful, and the escape running is breathtakingly exciting, the excessive violence just makes this film a bit unbearable. The story is about how the Mayan warriors invade the neighboring tribes for their human sacrifices whose lives are replaced by the others. Standing at the edge of life, by the twist of fate, Jaguar Paw dramatically escapes from the death and fights his way back to his land, people, family and love. But the ending is slightly ruined by the unexpected way how he runs out of the Mayans.
